Amendment 18: Prohibition

Section 1.
After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited.
Section 2.
The Congress and the several States shall have concurrent power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
Section 3.
This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.

This amendment was important during the time in which banned the making, sale, and delivery of alcohol. It was also the only amendment ever repealed in 1933. This significance of this amendment was a dominant stance of our government against alcohol in the United States. There were benefits, but was historically opposed since the population had had this freedom until now. The goal was to make the society better as a whole by removing alcohol consumption and sales, but inevitably backfired as the public also fired back.

If you are a fan of the Simpsons you will enjoy this video, but I think it gives a comical view of the ban of alcohol as it leads to the utter destruction of the whole town. This gives insight into the initial founding of the amendment in the first place, as a way to better a drunken nation. While it did infringe upon freedoms otherwise held, the purpose was pure in wanting to eliminate the incentive to consume and produce alcohol freely.

This video gives great perspective into the events and groups that pushed this amendment to exist. Even groups like the KKK were supportive of prohibition groups. It was cool to see all of the propaganda used to convince people to vote for or against this ban on alcohol. Events following the amendment led people to backlash and still produce alcohol illegally, such as moonshine. It was an extension of the government too far into people's freedom and was reacted to as such.
