Amendment 23: D.C. given presidential electors

Section 1.
The District constituting the seat of Government of the United States shall appoint in such manner as Congress may direct:
A number of electors of President and Vice President equal to the whole number of Senators and Representatives in Congress to which the District would be entitled if it were a State, but in no event more than the least populous State; they shall be in addition to those appointed by the States, but they shall be considered, for the purposes of the election of President and Vice President, to be electors appointed by a State; and they shall meet in the District and perform such duties as provided by the twelfth article of amendment.
Section 2.
The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

The 23rd Amendment gives Washington DC voice in our government to cast their vote for representatives in the electoral college. This is important because previously Washington DC did not have a say in the government itself. It had not representatives, but was allotted three through this amendment and it is not based their population or size. While it only allows the electoral college votes it still deems importance to have each state, or in this case our capitol, have a voice in selecting the President.

While this video is just a rap it is quite well done. It incorporates everything that the 23rd hopes to change and also has a nice flow to it. It is a unique way to learn what the intricacies of the amendment are including citizens of DC feeling underrepresented in the election of the President. It is something that is tricky since they are responsible for also running the government, but as a nation for the people we still need some form a representation.

Hip Hughes does a great job hear explaining exactly what is included following the history leading up to this representation coming from DC. Stated however that DC currently does not have House or Senate representation as other states do. This is something that I believe we will still continue to debate as Washington DC is still part of our nation and thus will fight for representation in all areas.
